Oliver at 3 Weeks

He's changed a lot in three weeks!

Often cute, but he can still be grumpy!

3 Weeks Old!

Today is Oliver's 3-week birthday! He's still quite a good baby, but he's starting to find his voice a bit more. Complaints are becoming a bit more frequent and a bit more obscure. Sometimes it takes mom and dad a while to figure out what he's asking for, although "more food" or "big poop" still seem to top the list.

He's definitely growing and is getting a bit big for some of his newborn duds. With the weather improving he's wearing some more hip t-shirts and he's starting to fit into some pants, without them coming up to his armpits.

More photos on the way tonight for sure.

Happy 3 weeks little guy!

Oliver's family

Oliver has had lots of visits from grandparents, uncles, aunts and cousins. We haven't shared too many of these photos yet so here is a quick collection.

Oliver & his dad

He's definitely getting more interactive, even if that means a bit more demanding. Yesterday evening he stayed awake for close to three hours straight and required attention from both his parents for most of that stretch. At least when he finally settled he slept for most of the night.

Busy Weekend

This weekend was more than a bit busy, especially since the nice weather finally arrived (ok so a couple of thunderstorms too).

Oliver attended his first birthday party for his cousin Brody who turned 4! He slept through most of it.

Although Oliver still hasnt hit 3 weeks yet, he is filling out and looks less and less like an old man and more like an actual baby. He still has his "toad" moments though.

2 weeks old

So today is Oliver's 2-week birthday, and I actually didn't take any photos of him today. That's a first. It was also Dad's first day back at the office - potentially related.

I'll get some more new ones this weekend. It is incredible how fast he changes. He's already filling out, well at least his cheeks, and he is definitely getting longer and heavier.

He's still a good sleeper, but we seem to have made some backward progress on diaper changes, just ask his mom. Today saw mom getting the treatment usually reserved for dad, except compounded by a bit of a poop as well!

The Burping Man

Listen carefully and you can hear excerpts from this week's Heroes in the background. Yes, mom and dad are watching quality tv while parenting.

Wordle at 2 weeks

So with the Blog (and Oliver) going strong for 2 weeks, I thought it was time for a WORDLE.

Wordle: Oliver - 2 weeks

or two.

New expressions

As he spends more time awake, Oliver's repertoire of expressions is starting to grow. No longer are we treated to only a series of frowns and furrowed brows, although they still appear quite regularly.

We are constantly surprised by this little man and we're not totally sure what we did without him.

Bright eyed and bushy tailed

At least he was this was this afternoon. Hopefully he wont be quite so awake tonight, particularly as tomorrow is Dad's first day back at the office and while not expecting a log-like eight hours, I was kind of hoping for around 5 or 6.

Enough Pictures!

Oliver may have had enough of the Paparazzi.

The Bundle

Not much to report today. Oliver is becoming a better eater with each passing day. He's still pretty chill and today we made it through two diaper changes with no crying. Dad didnt get peed on either.

His Dad and Mom picked up their new ride too and he seemed to approve as he fell asleep almost instantaneously for both his car trips. We'll get some photos in our new wheels soon.

Grumpy old man

Surprisingly content post-feed, Oliver is happy to be burped, despite appearances.

Tiny fingers, not so tiny toes

Lounging

So Oliver is quickly approaching his two week milestone. Yesterday the remnants of his umbilical cord came off (stop reading if this is too much information) and today at the doctor's he weighed in at 81 grams above his birth weight for a hearty 3710 grams.

I guess you put on weight when you spend all your time eating and sleeping!

The Amazing Finger Suck

To date Oliver has forsaken the thumb and is quite into sucking his first two fingers.

Six AM Panic!

As new parents we are diligently ensuring little Oliver gets in all of his little meals. Obviously this has meant many feedings in the wee hours of the morning. Oliver, however, has not been helping us out. He doesn't usually cry when hungry, reserving his largest protests for diaper changes.

So last night he ate his late night snack at around 11:30pm and everyone settled down to bed. The next thing Nick & Cris knew it was 6:00am - more than six hours since the last feed!

In a panic we woke the little one up and rushed a meal into him. Panic averted! Except it was only a panic for his parents. He had eaten a lot yesterday and was perfectly content to sleep and digest.

He's still gaining weight and seems to prefer his meals in the daylight. If he wants to let us get good six hour stretches of sleep, all the power to him.

Man in Motion

Still working on the video, but here is another snippet.

Oliver & the Moose

Even though he hasn't had a chance to go camping yet, we thought we'd get Oliver acquainted with the wildlife.

A trip to the mat

It's incredible the things you can do at a week old, like lie on a mat and sneeze.

Taking a Break

Taking a break before heading out on his first big outing - a nice stroll down the Danforth. With the weather cracking double-digits it had to be done.

We're trying to familiarize him with some more exotic jungle creatures.

He wasn't on a fishing trip, but still "it was THIS big!"

He's still not sure what to make of the camera.

Amazing how a crib can look like a prison.

Sleep tight

1 Week Old!

It seems amazing that it was only a week ago as we sat up all night working through painful contractions. Now we only sit up all night getting the little guy to eat. It's only been a week, but what a week!

We are continuously surprised by this little being. His personality is already coming out and, as he improves at breastfeeding, his parents get a bit more rest and a bit more space to truly appreciate his existence.

Nicknames have been flying from the more standard "Ollie" and "OJ" to "Toad" and now "Chicken Wing". This last one stems from his pose as, when he gets a truly good latch and is gulping back his meal, he tucks his fists under his chin and makes a little chicken wing with his arm.

Peace!

Oliver is becoming quite character. While in most of these photos he looks like he's frowning, he does have other expressions.

Bath-time follies

While Oliver had his first bath in the hospital (see post below), it was quickly mom and dad's turn to bathe and clean him (his success in bowel movements and slightly sloppy feeding habits contributed to an acceleration in his hygiene regime).

So mom and dad, maybe a bit short of sleep and a bit panicky at the prospect of a slippery crying infant, thought the best approach was to put the soap directly into his little tub. The bath itself went great. With not too much crying on Oliver's part and no noticeable deposits in the water, mom and dad declared "mission accomplished", only to have to do it all over again. The addition of soap the bath water made rising little Oliver a bit problematic as he continued to shine with a fine soapy film. Now a slippery baby who was not afraid to express his feelings about the situation had to be added to a fresh tub of clean water to be rinsed. Bath-two in as many minutes again went well and we're all a bit wiser from the experience.

His second (or third depending how you count) bath a couple of days later was much smoother. We'll let you know if tomorrow's goes according to plan.

Family Portrait

So far there's been lots of shots of the little dude, but not so many of his proud parents. Well here is a family portrait (or snapshot at least) that was taken shortly after his arrival.

People don't look quite so pale in black and white!

Oliver in motion

OJC on video!

Not a stellar action sequence, but he is moving.

More Oliver

A couple more quick snaps (sandwiched in between changing, feeding and sleeping).

All three of us want to thank everyone for their kind wishes and support. We are all still a bit tired and trying to find a bit of routine in the chaos. We're looking forward to seeing everyone and catching up more fully in a couple of weeks. Oliver can't wait to meet you all!

Oliver's First bath

Oliver had his first bath in Hospital. He was a good sport, but ultimately wasn't a big fan of the experience. He cried a fair amount, but settled quickly.

When he cries, he turns a nice rosy colour all over, just in case you didn't hear him.

But he was quite a contented little boy when all was said and done!

Oliver's First Days

Oliver's arrival was amazing!

Cris, Nick and Oliver are home now and figuring each other out. Mom and Dad are bit tired, but Oliver is sleeping well.
