Christmas is Coming

It's December 1st, and while the snow hasn't settled in, yet, Christmas is less than four weeks away. As always, it's time to manage expectations for the wee ones - Christmas is in sight, but still far enough away. Thankfully our parenting predecessors figured this one out already, hence the Advent Calendar. Sure, sure, there was probably some religious and ceremonial significance when they first emerged a few hundred years ago, but we'll take the parenting help where we can get it.

As a child, I loved those little chocolates hidden behind the flaps. Looking back, I'm not sure my parents were the biggest fans of chocolate before breakfast. These days, however, we have lots of options. Our boys are excited to start assembling there scenes - Star Wars LEGO for the big one, Playmobil NHL Hockey for the littler one. It'll be nice to be hoisting Lord Stanley's cup in our living room, even if it is in miniature.

Now I just need to get myself some slippers to avoid stepping on all those little pieces of plastic.

Full Disclosure: Playmobil provided a sample product free of charge, opinions are my own.

The 2nd Annual Way to Win Father's Day (a gift guide)

Last year around this time I put together a little Father's Day gift guide to help find that perfect something for that great Dad (or Dads) in your life. And we're doing it again this year! Stick with us, kids. You're going to be just fine.

Man Crates

It's always appreciated if you can help your dad survive a zombie apocalypse (might be something in it for you too). He'll love it if you can satisfy his nostalgia for retro gaming (although you may not get the TV back). Of course there is the simple pleasure of jerky, lots of jerky (hands off!). Enter Man Crates. These curated crates strike just the right balance of whimsy and practicality. Oh, and he gets to open them with a crowbar. Well done Man Crates, well done.

And they just happen to running a contest to send 2 lucky dudes on a VIP tour of Germany’s famous Oktoberfest!  Enter you email address for a chance to win!

A New Ride
This year for wheels I'm focusing on something with practicality in mind. Something that can get you around the city while nimble enought to squeeze into the tightest parking spots. Of course it has to be quick too. How else can you make it to daycare before the cutoff, to t-ball before the first pitch is placed, or to the LCBO befor they close up shop? This year why not get that special guy in your life the Fiat Abarth. As one (former) automotive journalist summed it up, "160 horsepower in the car the size of a shoe. Fantastic".

If you build it, they will come
LEGO. This one made last year's list too. (For those taking notes, I still haven't received a set of my very own). Something cool like the new Star Wars, Jurassic Park or Superhero sets would hit the spot. Or you can always select something more "mature" like the Architecture series.

The Axe
What guy doesn't want that manliest of tools, the axe. And if you are going to get him one, might as well get him a good one. One that he can pass on to his kids and they theirs. Yes, we're talking about the kind of lumber and steel lovingly handmade by Basecamp X. Go with their versatile Pioneer, the rugged Titanis or all out with a custom order. Respect the tool.

Just for fun you can always get "The Furies" instead. Yup, throwing knives. Or maybe just a coffee mug. They have those too.

A New Deck
The kids are still into it and dad was back in the day, so why not make him feel young again with a new skateboard deck? He'll be familiar with Tony Hawk and Powell Peralta, but rather than have him try too hard to find his (lost) glory days, our friends up at Beau's have one of their very own.  If he has trouble finding his "old school" skills, he can always just mount it on the wall. And a share of the proceeds go to a charity to expand an Ottawa-area skate park.

If a skateboard is too much, the fine folks of Beau's offer a ton of other cool swag.

A little something for the Cottage

If he's lucky enough to spend all his time and money maintaining, fixing, cleaning, pruning, clearing own a cottage, there are always some nice touches for if when he gets to put his feet up on the dock. The traditional Hudson's Bay point blanket will let him linger a little longer after sunset (and provide another layer of protection from the mosquitos). Muskoka Brewery is offering a nice little service this summer: Dockside Draught. A keg fridge, barware, dockside beer delivery, and maintenance all in one handy package from a tasty brewery.

Take him out to the Ball Game
Warm summer evernings, fresh buttery popcorn, mustard-smothered hot dogs, ice cold beer, and the crack of the bat. Some say that Jays might even make the playoffs, the season so far notwithstanding. Let's hope it goes a bit better for them than their colleagues on the hardwood.

If you're in Toronto and need a little extra help getting to the ballpark, check out the various events put together by Left Field Brewery. You can ride with them to the big leagues, or hop on bus, make a run for the border and check out some Triple A ball.

Meat
Last year we wished for a Big Green Egg. This year, it's about knowing what to do with it. Enter Olliffe, a fancy Toronto butcher, or as they put it "Purveyors of the Finest Meats". They want to help you "know your meat" and are putting their money where their mouths are with their Butchery Classes. Topics vary: Making a Terrine, Knife Skills, Roasting, but not only will dad benefit, you might get a taste of the results. A night of meat, knives and wine? What could go wrong?

Date Night
It might sound sappy, but Dad would love some time with the partner in his life. Some simple, uninterrupted time. If it's a picnic at the beach, a dinner at cool restaurant, or even a walk in park, some time with the special someone is always treasured. I'm thinking about a night with the boys in bed, some nice wine at hand, a few warm blankets enjoying a cheesy movie. If we can't make it to the movies (do they let you take wine in there anyway?), why not make your own theatre by projecting the film on the wall. I have my eye on something like this to make it happen. And if you have to get him the projector as gift, so be it.

As always, if Dad has let slip something vital, then go with that, but we think every item on this list is a winner, and beyond Father's Day. So you can thank us at Christmas time too.

Please shout out in the comments below any ideas you feel worthy to thank dad for the awesome job he does all year. Happy Father's Day!

A Land of LEGO?

We are big LEGO fans. We've been building Duplo and LEGO for years. I loved it as a kid and now my boys love it.

Oh yes, I still love it too.

Our house is filled with those multicoloured bricks and the limitless creations built out of them. Sure I curse when I step on one, but it's a small price to pay.

Recently we had the opportunity to visit the LEGOland Discovery Centre in Toronto. We had a great time.

We trained like LEGO ninjas in the Ninjago exhibit. We built race cars, and raced them down ramps. We played in the playground with giant foam bricks and danced with the LEGO Friends. It was a nice balance for two very different boys of different ages.

Kai & Ollie
The big guy was thrilled to be able to trade some of his minifigures having recently gotten five of the same character in the most recent minifigure series (what are the odds of that?!).

The staff were great. They loved the LEGO as much as the kids and were quick to share their excitement. There is a good variety of activities. The cafe could be improved - there's not much beyond pizza and sandwhiches, but you're not their for the food.

And of course you have run the gauntlet of the retail store as you exit, but to be expected. They do have a great selection of LEGO products.

Aliens!
The big guy was keen to attend the Master Builder Academy. He clearly views this as a trial run for his post-secondary endaevours given how his current career of choice is Master Builder. In the Academy we built our very own aliens.

Concentration of a Master Builder

We had such a good time that when it came time to ask the big guy what he wanted to do for his brithday the answer was easy: LEGOland!

Did I mention?

Disclosure: LEGOland provided complimentary admission

Countdown to Christmas

It's December 1st. Not sure how that got here so soon. My wife is extra happy as it coincides with the end of Movember and so my Mo' is no more. Of course, you still have a couple of days to donate, perhaps to celebrate the departure of the lip-caterpillar: http://mobro.co/nickcheeseman

The boys are excited too as Christmas is around the corner. We still have a lot of work to do to get ready, but at least we were successful in the first challenge of the holiday season - the advent calendar. This shouldn't be a huge task, but the big guy was very specific. This year it was to be the Star Wars Lego Advent calendar.

Wow. That puppy is hard to find. On-line - Sold Out. Local toy store - Sold Out. Calling frantically across Toronto - Sold Out.

I had given up hope, and sadly I had no Force to use. Somehow though, supermommy of the year found one.

Now we are good to go. Where can I find that Skylanders Trap Team?

The Offical CanaDad Father's Day Gift Guide

With Mother's Day in the books, this year we are pulling together CanaDad's first ever Father's Day Gift Guide. Just a small collection of things that I the great men in your life will appreciate at this celebration of all things dad.

On to the list, in no particular order:

Noise Cancelling Headphones

New tech always goes down well with Dads, even if at first they don't know how to work it. Since he probably hasn't listened to new music since the late 1990's (no, Frozen doesn't count), so how about some new headphones? The noise-cancelling feature means Dad will be able to find some peace and quiet to actually hear those new bands he's heard so much about. Even if the monkeys are hanging from the chandelier.
I hear that these are rather nice: Bose Quietcomfort 15.

A New Ride

Dad is often called upon to be the chauffeur.  A new vehicle to help with the dropoffs and pickups and dropoffs and pickups and dropoffs and pickups hits the spot. That midlife crisis can't be far below the horizon either. So why not get him something both sporty and functional? Something with some zip to make those trips to the Home Depot a little bit quicker, but with the space to accommodate all of the munchkins and their gear? Hence the Maserati Quattroporte.

Belt Buckle

A unique or vintage buckle goes a long way to keeping Dad cool. It's a manly accessory, without being too hipster. And of course it is functional too, helping to keep those pants up over that ever expanding waistline. Bonus points for the Jolly Roger, as it'll make him feel like a pirate, or at least that maybe someone is after his booty.

Season Tickets A Pair of Tickets to the Raptors

Tickets to a sporting event are always great. Season seats are even better. Instead of watching the game at home on the couch, Dad will be out of the house around 41 times. That's 41 nights of peace and quiet. 41 nights the baby won't be woken by shouts of encouragement/expletive filled rants. 41 fewer opportunities for the little ones to pick up choice invective. Of course, given realities here in Toronto, a pair of tickets will probably be all the pocketbook can handle, even though at that price you might get season seats somewhere, like San Antonio.

LEGO

Most parents agree that Lego is a great toy for kids. Most moms will also notice that Dad get just as into it as the little ones. Some so much that there is more whining and bickering coming from he who should know better. So why not get Dad a set of his very own? There are even some great satirical options out there. Helping everyone avoid flesh wounds.

Booze

Many Dads I know enjoy a drink now and then. Whether it's after a job well done getting the garden in shape, warming up after shovelling the driveway, or kicking back with some friends, a good scotch can warm a guys' cockles insides. Rather than a single bottle, look into a membership in a "whiskey of the month" club, or if you live in a monopolized liquor jurisdiction (see Ontario; see LCBO; see antiquated booze laws) get some of his buddies together to host a monthly get-together. This also works well for bourbon and tequila and beer. Not so much for Malibu.

BBQ

Since we've already mentioned booze, we can't forget BBQ. Whether he'll admit it or not, Dad takes great pride in being King of the Grill, Master of the Charcoal, Lord of the Flies Meat. 10 years ago, my in-laws gifted me a phenomenal Weber grill, which is still going strong to this day. My Weber has served me well these years, grilling evenly through thick and thin, summer and winter, sunshine and rain. Better than a US postal carrier, my Weber always delivers. So if you don't have one, get him one of those. Next on my grill list, however, is a bit more of a conversation piece: enter the Big Green Egg. A grill, a smoker, an oven all in one.

A Good Read
A good book can often be overlooked around Father's Day. When does Dad have time to read anyway? So a good read along with some dedicated time to actually read, maybe with a glass of item 6 on this list, can go a long way. For Canadian political junkies, Paul Wells' The Longer I'm Prime Minister is certainly worth it.

And there you have it. Of course, if Dad has put together his own Amazon Wish List or is dropping not-so-subtle hints every time you pass a certain shop window, then go with that.

Happy Father's Day-ing. And let me know how it goes!

Tradition!

Stop me if you've heard this one before: When I was a kid, I had some pretty cool toys.

Transformers - check.
Hot Wheels - you know it.
GI Joe - check.
M.A.S.K.(!?) - yup that too.

Before I start sounding off about the uphill both ways, I will concede that there is some pretty neat stuff nowadays too. Hex Bugs seem cool (in the store). Magformers are definitely awesome, and so are Wedgits. Of course, the big daddy of building toys is Lego.

The little dude, getting bigger everyday, has been into Duplo for at least two years now. And we build some awesome Zurg BoatsTM . But this weekend I went rooting around in the furnace room and dug out a big old tupperware my mom had put aside for me.

It's survived a childhood, a little sister, a flood, a reno and a trip across the Great White North. It's next challenge - my almost 4-year old.

As the little bricks spilled out onto the floor, I was transported back to the basements of my youth. A moon baseplate! Instructions for the original 375 Castle (if not all the bricks)! Old school mini-figures!

The little man dug it.

And now, it's time for Dad to really play!
